Set During the Boxing Episode (Episode 307- Fight Night)

-----

“Greg! Why do you always do this?” Grissom asked, not really irritated, but forcing his voice to sound that way for the sake of everyone else in the room.

He glanced up and saw Greg look over at him with his brown eyes wide, sparkiling, and Grissom swallowed against the lump that rose involuntarily in his throat.

“Because you make me nervous.” Greg said simply. Grissom raised his eyebrows and saw Dr. Robbins grin at him teasingly while the rest of the CSIs just nodded in agreement, like, “Yeah, we know what you mean.”

------

He made Greg nervous?

Truth be told, Grissom wasn’t exactly surprised. Apparently he make a lot of people nervous. Who knew? But for some reason finding out that he made Greg nervous, even if he had been half kidding, bothered him.

“So.” Dr. Robbins said later, as they were examining the body of the boxer, “Are you going to talk to him about it?”

Before Grissom could respond, he laughed and corrected himself. “What am I saying, of course you won’t talk to him about it. Let me ask it another way: How long are you going to brood about this?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Grissom said, and Dr. Robbins rolled his eyes.

“Yeah right.” He leaned down to examine a bruise on Le Roy’s jaw. “You know,” He continued conversationally. “I don’t usually believe that people are ever actually in denial, but in your case, I’d have to say, yeah, denial is pretty prevalent.”

“Denial?” Grissom repeated dumbly, his usually ever-present sharp wit pretty much on hiatus for the moment.

“Yeah. Denial.” Dr. Robbins continued to run his gloved fingers over the bruises and cuts on their dead body. “About Sanders.”

Grissom stared at him, jaw dropped open.

“You’re crazy.” He said finally. “I’m not in “denial” over Greg.”

“Hmmm.” Dr. Robbins didn’t look up.

“I’m not.” Grissom repeated, his voice a little higher then he would have liked.

Dr. Robbins straigtened up and peered at Grissom over his bifocals. “Gil.” He said after a few seconds. “What do you think of Greg?”

“What do I think of Greg?”

“What do you think of Greg.”

“I think... I think he’s smart.” Grissom said slowly. “I think he’s very smart. I mean, sure his clothes never match, and his hair’s always a mess, and he dresses as if every day were laundry day. He plays that annoying music too loud, but I can never tell him to turn it down because it makes him so happy. He tells too many stories and he’s always waving his hands around and staring at me with his inclandesent eyes. He’s smart and stubborn and annoying and eccentric as hell.”

“And you like him.” Dr. Robbins finished for him.

Grissom started. “What? No I don’t like him! I...”

“You like him.” Dr. Robbins smiled in that ‘you’re-so-dense-it’s-almost-cute’ way he usually got from Catherine.

“You like how enthusiastic he is and how he never complains. You like talking to him about the cases and you like his laid-back attitude that’s sexy because he doesn’t know it’s sexy. You like him Gil. And you hate that you make him nervous.”

Grissom could only stare in shock.

Dr. Robbins went back to work and a few minutes later heard Grissom mutter something under his breath that made him smile.

“I- I- Oh, fuck.”
