Chapter 2

“Jim’s mad.” Warrick said as soon as Nick pulled out into the street. He slouched in his seat, stretching his long legs out. Nick glanced over at him sideways.

“Maybe he thinks you shouldn’t have gotten involved with the Ellie case.” He suggested.

Warrick’s head snapped up. “Hey, they sent me away from the LAPD thing, I didn’t ask to be put on that assignment. And *Jim* called *me* after he found the meth lab.” Nick just looked at him, and finally he sighed.

“You’re probably right. He didn’t tell anyone here about it, just that it was a family emergency.”

Nick parked the car and got out, grabbing his kit. “He knows it’s not your fault. Whatever his problem is, he’ll get over it eventually.”

Warrick knew he was probably right. He followed Nick up the front steps of the victim’s house.

“Where’s Catherine?” He asked, leaning down to dust the doorknob.

“Flirting with the owner of the club the victim was found at.” Nick said, rolling his eyes, and Warrick grinned.

Nick took a picture of the broken lock. “I’ll never understand how she got be supervisor over us.”

“Neither will I.” Warrick said honestly, and Nick laughed.

------

Jim felt like an idiot.

Really, what sort of Police Department Captain hid in their office anyway? And yet here he was.

He pretended to look over some reports for a minute, then threw them back onto his desk once he realized that he had absolutely no idea what he’d just read.

“Okay, enough of this.” He said out loud, grateful that he’d thought to close the door when he’d raced in two hours ago. “This is stupid. I’m a cop, I face criminals and crazy people with guns every day, I am not going to hide in my office from my colleges like some sort of coward.”

He stood up and walked over the door, then turned around again, sinking back into his seat. “Maybe just a couple more hours.”

------

“Sara!” Grissom shouted, walking out of his office. “Where is Brass, I haven’t seen him all night.”

Sara shrugged.

“He was supposed to question the suspect with me, but he just took off.” Grissom went on.

Sara pushed her hair out of her eyes. “Have you tried calling him?”

Grissom paused, the pulled out his phone, turning away. Sara smiled. Her boss may have been smart, but he had no common sense.

------

Jim sank onto his couch, exhausted.

After Grissom had called him in to question the newest suspect with him, it had turned into the triple shift when the cousin was found murdered too, right when the guy they thought murdered the first person was in custody.

He leaned his head back and closed his eyes. And he hadn’t even seen Warrick the whole time they’d been working. Not that he missed him or anything.

The sound of knocking pulled him back from the almost-asleep state he’d been in, and he got up to answer the door.

He looked through the peephole as was habit since the whole thing with Nicky and the stalker, and his eyes widened in shock when he saw it was Warrick. He jumped back from the door and practically vaulted over to the mirror above his umbrella stand.

“Brass?” He heard Warrick call, and he ran his fingers through his hair one more time before he told himself he was being silly and opened the door.

“Warrick. Hey.” He stepped back to let him in, and tried not to feel his heart squeezing in his chest as Warrick’s face fell.

“Hey.” He said, closing the door behind him. “I’m sorry to barge in on you like this.”

“It’s alright.” Jim said. “Ah. Drink or something?”

Warrick shook his head. “I just came by to apologize. For getting involved in the case in LA. I know you didn’t want everyone in Vegas to know your business.”

Jim stared.

“I shouldn’t have come with LA CSIs,” Warrick went on. “They asked me if I knew you, and I was just curious I guess, and-”

Jim could barely concentrate on what he was saying. Warrick was *sorry*?? He had come here to *apologize* when Jim should be the one begging forgiveness for ignoring him and acting weird for no good reason. And Warrick was saying *he* was sorry???

Jim swallowed hard, trying to make the lump in his throat go away.

“-And then I would have stayed away, but you called me, and-”

And Warrick’s bright green eyes were just so hurt and sad even though Jim could tell that he was trying to be casual and understanding, and he just looked so *sorry*.

“Rick.” Jim said finally, interrupting him.

Warrick stopped talking.

Jim leaned in and kissed him.

And suddenly felt a lot better.

This is fabulous! I love it! Ever read a story where you're just so amazed that no mere review can really express your awe? That's me all the way. You write Warrick and Jim so well. I saw that episode and thought they look pretty comfy in that hotel room; really, I'm just so stunned I can barely type. Wow. The only thing I can say with complete comfidence is that I can't wait for chapter three!
